NAD+ and NADH supplements – what are they and what are their benefits?

NAD+ and NADH are key molecules for cellular energy production. Their significance relates to metabolism, energy levels, and cellular aging. This article clarifies what these molecules are, how NAD+ supplements work, and who might benefit from them.

What is NAD+?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a naturally occurring coenzyme in the body that all cells need. Its main roles include energy production in mitochondria, processes related to cellular metabolism, DNA repair processes, and regulatory mechanisms related to cellular aging. NAD+ acts as the “energy carrier of cells,” helping convert nutrients into usable energy.

What is NMNH?

NMNH is the reduced form of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) and a precursor to NADH. It is needed to build NADH. NMNH is a newer discovery whose existence and importance have only been recognized in recent studies. Research on this molecule is still in early stages, so not all of its properties are fully known. However, it is already known to be closely related to NAD metabolism, and some studies have found it absorbs and transports into cells especially efficiently due to its small molecular size. Additionally, certain tissues have been found to contain NMN transport proteins. Thanks to NMNH, the cell can produce NAD+ itself. Studies have shown NMNH’s ability to raise NAD levels in tissues and improve some metabolic markers.

Currently, NMNH is believed to be a very effective way to raise NAD levels, which is why longevity and biohacker experts are particularly interested in it. Research on this topic continues.
