The name may be confusing, but tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) must be distinguished from tea (Camellia sinensis). According to the story, Captain James Cook gave the plant this name during his circumnavigation. When he landed in Australia, the sailors made tea for him from the leaves of a tree from the Myrtaceae family.
