Milk thistle (Silybum marianium L.) is a plant of the Asteraceae family, native to the Mediterranean basin. It has been used in herbal medicine for over 2000 years and is commercially cultivated in Europe and America. The source of silymarin as an herbal raw material is the fruits – small gray-brown flower heads. In 1969, active compounds, including silymarin (a flavonolignan complex), were isolated from them and began to be used as a dietary supplement.
