Selenium – a small trace element, great importance for health
Selenium is an essential mineral for humans, playing a central role in health. It belongs to the body's most important antioxidant trace elements, so adequate intake from the diet is important.
Selenium is found throughout the body and participates in the function of about 20–30 important enzymes. One of its key roles is to act as part of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme – this enzyme functions as an antioxidant and protects cells from harmful oxidation. Additionally, selenium binds toxic heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, and supports complementary functions with vitamin E in the body. Selenium is also important for normal thyroid function, and deficiencies in selenium and iodine can disrupt thyroid function.
Certain groups of people may be particularly susceptible to selenium deficiency. Adequate intake should be especially considered for pregnant women, vegetarians and vegans, smokers, those who eat only organic food (because organic food does not contain added selenium), and those with poor eating habits, malnutrition, intestinal diseases, or absorption disorders.
