Everything you need to know about vitamin B6 and B vitamins
B vitamins are essential water-soluble compounds that are involved in energy metabolism, nervous system function, and cellular well-being. Of these, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) in particular plays a key role in many metabolic processes, such as protein breakdown and supporting the nervous system.
What are B vitamins?
B vitamins are a large group of eight different vitamins. They work together to support the body's energy metabolism and overall well-being. As they are water-soluble, they are not stored significantly in the body, so daily intake is important.
The role of vitamin B6 in the body
Vitamin B6 is particularly important in supporting the function of the nervous and immune systems. It is involved in over 100 enzymatic reactions in the body and has an effect on, among other things:
- Protein and amino acid metabolism: Helps the body utilize proteins efficiently.
- Nervous system function: Promotes the formation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which affect mood and sleep.
- For red blood cell production: Supports the formation of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to cells.
- For the immune system: Strengthens the body's defenses.
Sources of vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is found in many foods, but its intake may remain low if the diet is one-sided. The best sources are:
- Animal products: Chicken, fish, liver.
- Plant-based sources: Potato, banana, whole grains, avocado.
- Supplements: Multivitamins or individual B6 preparations can supplement intake in special situations.
For whom is vitamin B6 particularly important?
Although vitamin B6 is important for everyone, certain groups particularly benefit from adequate intake:
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women: Supports fetal development and helps prevent nausea.
- Elderly: With age, the absorption of vitamin B6 decreases, so supplements may be necessary.
- Vegans and vegetarians: Plant-based foods contain less vitamin B6, which can lead to a deficiency.
- Actively moving: Athletes can benefit from vitamin B6, which supports muscle recovery and energy production.
Vitamin B6 deficiency: symptoms and risks
Vitamin B6 deficiency can lead to a variety of health problems, such as:
- For fatigue and low energy levels.
- Nervous system disorders, such as tingling or cramps.
- To weakened immunity.
- For skin problems and cracks around the mouth.
Vitamin B6 in supplements
Vitamin B6 is often included in multivitamins together with other B vitamins. This combination supports their synergistic effect in the body. When choosing a vitamin B6 supplement, make sure it meets your needs and contains high-quality ingredients.
