Manuka honey – nature’s antibacterial all-rounder
Manuka honey is a special honey originating from New Zealand, made by bees from the flowers of Manuka bushes. It is known for its strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which are due in part to methylglyoxal and hydrogen peroxide components.
Manuka honey supports the body’s immune system, eases sore throats, and relieves digestive problems. Its anti-inflammatory and probiotic properties also make it a valuable aid for gut health. In addition, it is nutrient-rich and high in energy, which is why some athletes use it before exercise—though in moderation due to fluctuations in blood sugar.
When used externally, Manuka honey promotes skin healing, moisturizes effectively, and soothes irritated skin. It is suitable, for example, for acne-prone skin and as a rejuvenating face mask.
What is Manuka honey?
In 2013, a working group was established with the New Zealand government to define the eligibility criteria for bee products known as Manuka honey. According to research conducted in July 2014, Manuka honeys are monofloral honeys produced exclusively in New Zealand during the period coinciding with the flowering season of Manuka shrubs, and are produced primarily from the nectar of plants of the species Leptospermum scoparium.
What is MGO™?
MGO™ stands for methylglyoxal—a natural substance that researchers have recognised as a characteristic component of Manuka honey, which, due to its high concentration, distinguishes it from other honeys on the market. MGO™ is an objective and reproducible method for measuring and labelling the quality of Manuka honey.
