Manuka honey – nature’s antibacterial multipurpose product
Manuka honey is a special honey from New Zealand, produced by bees from the flowers of Manuka bushes. It is known for its strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which are attributable, among other things, to methylglyoxal and hydrogen peroxide components.
Manuka honey supports the body’s immune system and soothes sore throats during a cold. Its anti-inflammatory and probiotic properties also make it a valuable aid for gut health. In addition, it is nutrient-rich and energy-dense, which is why some athletes use it before exercise—though in moderation because of fluctuations in blood sugar.
When used externally, Manuka honey promotes skin health, moisturises effectively and soothes irritated skin. It is suitable, for example, for acne-prone skin and as a skin-renewing face mask.
What is Manuka honey?
In 2013, a working group was established with the New Zealand government to define the eligibility criteria for bee products known as Manuka honey. According to research conducted in July 2014, Manuka honeys are homogeneous honeys produced exclusively in New Zealand during the flowering season of Manuka bushes, and are produced primarily from the nectar of plants of the species Leptospermum scoparium.
What is MGO™?
MGO™ is an abbreviation for methylglyoxal—a natural substance recognised by researchers as a characteristic component of Manuka honey, which, due to its high concentration, distinguishes it from other honeys on the market. MGO™ is a method for measuring and labelling Manuka honey quality that is objective and reproducible.

USE: It is recommended to take 2–3 teaspoons (15 g) of honey in the morning on an empty stomach, or 1 teaspoon 2–3 times a day half an hour before a meal.
