Why organic?

Organic is an established abbreviation in the Finnish language for organic agriculture and food production, and it means a natural, environmentally friendly, and ethically high-standard way of producing food. Organic combines the best production methods from an environmental perspective, high requirements for animal welfare, and consumers' wishes for high-quality and natural products.

For example, when talking about organic grain, the production method differs from conventionally produced grain in that organic grain is not fertilized with industrial chemical fertilizers nor are chemical pesticides used in cultivation. Instead, organic fertilizers and careful crop rotation are used, which ensure the growth conditions of the field.

Many substances in our food and environment affect human health only after a long delay; perhaps only in the next generations. Limits considered safe have been set for pesticide residues in food, which food products must not exceed. However, consumers are exposed to small allowed residue levels throughout their lives. The combined effects of several pesticides on human health are not yet known at all.

Additive loads in sweets and delicacies are often significant, so we want to offer cleaner options to enjoy for all generations.

Can imported organic products be trusted?

Organic is strictly controlled in all EU member states. Different EU countries have their own practices for how control is organized, but the rules are the same.

In Finland, all organic farmers, organic product manufacturers, organic product importers, and grocery stores that conduct significant loose organic product sales using the official organic label are subject to organic control and are thus committed to complying with the EU's common organic regulations. Actors subject to organic control are inspected at least once a year. Control visits ensure that organic regulations have been followed. Only actors who pass the inspection can sell their products as organic and use the organic label.

Organic products imported from outside the EU must also meet the same requirements as products produced within the EU. We have appropriate organic certificates for all products in our online store as well as for the brands we represent.

Which additives and sweeteners are allowed in organic products?

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame or acesulfame K and artificial colorings are not allowed in organic foods.

  • BIODIVERSITY

Organic fields have been scientifically shown to host nearly one third more plant and animal species than conventionally farmed fields.

Organic crop production is based on efficient nutrient recycling to conserve non-renewable natural resources.

When the soil has good crumb structure, fertilizer runoff from fields into water bodies is less than in conventional production. Pollution and eutrophication of groundwater and surface water decrease as a result of precise nutrient recycling.

  • SAFE FOOD

The use of additives in organic products is very strictly regulated, and most of the permitted additives are derived from natural sources.

According to international studies, those who prefer organic food get more antioxidants from their food than those who eat conventionally produced food.
Organic meat and milk contain about 50 percent more health-beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally produced ones.

Organic eaters are also not exposed to antibiotics through their food, as organic animals are not given antibiotics for disease prevention purposes.
