Manuka honey—the natural antibacterial multipurpose product
Manuka honey is a special honey originating from New Zealand, made by bees from the flowers of Manuka shrubs. It is known for its strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which are due, among other things, to methylglyoxal and hydrogen peroxide components.
Manuka honey supports the body's immune system and may relieve a sore throat during cold season. In addition, it is rich in nutrients and energy, which is why some athletes use it before exercise—though in moderation due to fluctuations in blood sugar.
When used externally, Manuka honey promotes skin health, moisturises effectively and soothes irritated skin. It is suitable, for example, for acne-prone skin and as a rejuvenating face mask.
What is Manuka honey?
In 2013, a working group was established with the New Zealand Government to define the eligibility criteria for bee products known as Manuka honey. According to a study conducted in July 2014, Manuka honeys are homogeneous honeys produced exclusively in New Zealand during the flowering period of Manuka shrubs, and are produced mainly from the nectar of plants of the Leptospermum scoparium species.
What is MGO™?
MGO™ is short for methylglyoxal—a natural substance recognised by researchers as a characteristic component of Manuka honey which, due to its high concentration, distinguishes it from other honeys on the market. MGO™ is a method for measuring and labelling the quality of Manuka honey that is objective and reproducible.

Manuka Health was the first to introduce a commercial quality designation for Manuka honey based on the methylglyoxal measurement method—MGO™ (since 2007)—and has made a significant contribution to scientific and official work related to the quality of Manuka honey in New Zealand and around the world.

USE: It is recommended to take 2–3 teaspoons (15 g) of honey in the morning on an empty stomach, or 1 teaspoon 2–3 times a day half an hour before meals.
