Manuka Honey
Manuka Honey is a special honey from New Zealand, made by bees from the flowers of Manuka shrubs.
Manuka Honey supports the body's natural defences and relieves sore throats during a cold. It is also rich in nutrients and energy, which is why some athletes use it before exercise – though in moderation due to fluctuations in blood sugar.
When applied externally, Manuka Honey promotes skin health, effectively moisturises and soothes irritated skin. It is suitable, for example, for treating acne and as a rejuvenating facial mask.
What is Manuka Honey?
In 2013, a working group was established with the New Zealand government to define the eligibility criteria for bee products known as Manuka Honey. According to research conducted in July 2014, Manuka honeys are homogeneous honeys produced exclusively in New Zealand during the flowering period of Manuka shrubs, and are produced mainly from the nectar of plants of the species Leptospermum scoparium.
What is MGO™?
MGO™ is an abbreviation for methylglyoxal – a natural substance recognised by researchers as a characteristic component of Manuka Honey which, thanks to its high concentration, distinguishes it from other honeys on the market. MGO™ is a method for measuring and labelling the quality of Manuka Honey that is objective and reproducible.

Manuka Health was the first to introduce commercial quality labelling for Manuka Honey using the methylglyoxal measurement method – MGO™ (since 2007) and has made a significant contribution to scientific and official work relating to the quality of Manuka Honey in New Zealand and around the world.
